Description

Electronic switching for shunt capacitors

KCS thyristor switches connect and disconnect low-voltage shunt capacitor steps in dynamic reactive power compensation systems. The switching assembly combines an inverse-parallel semiconductor power module with isolated triggering, synchronization, protection and drive circuits. The control input uses 0V for off and 12V for on, and phase-loss protection is provided.

Electrical selection

ParameterSpecification
Operating supply380V or 220V
Frequency50Hz
Controlled capacitor output at 380V1-30kvar
Controlled capacitor output at 220V1-10kvar
Logic control0V off; 12V on
KCS1A layoutOne three-phase capacitor group
KCS3F layoutThree separately controlled capacitor groups; use the matching split-phase wiring arrangement

Model and circuit configuration

The code identifies the KCS product family, switching layout, voltage class in kV, maximum controlled capacitor output in kvar and phase designation. Phase code 1 denotes single phase and 3 denotes three phases. A 0.4kV class example is distinct from the 380V system operating voltage.

Control wiring

Choose the circuit that matches the switching layout and compensation method. In the illustrated circuits, V1, V2 and V3 receive controller signals and K0 is the control common. The 1FT1 temperature switch is normally open below 50°C; 1FT2 is normally closed below 75°C. EV identifies the cooling fan. Retain these thermal contacts and the applicable supply and neutral connections when specifying the control assembly.

Outline and mounting

The illustrated enclosure is 145mm wide, 220mm high and 185mm deep. The drawing gives a 121mm horizontal mounting pitch, 190mm vertical pitch and four Ø4mm fixing holes. Check the terminal access and fan clearance against the selected module.
