Compact Rectangular Power Factor Capacitors

Description

Compact power factor correction capacitors

These rectangular low-voltage shunt capacitors use self-healing metallized film for power factor correction. The common dimensional schedule covers 1-20kvar at 400-450V, 50Hz. Select the output and height together; the listed cases share a 170mm length and 60mm width.

The described construction includes an internal discharge resistor, a protective device and a semi-solid impregnant with a dropping point above 70°C.

Mounting and terminals

Use crimp terminals with an M5 fixing hole and fit the terminal cover after making the connections. The illustrated fixing torque is 35-40kgf·cm, approximately 3.4-3.9N·m. The mounting drawing shows the installation plate, clamping nut and fixing screw arrangements for the case.

Inspection and maintenance

Isolate the circuit and discharge the capacitor before inspecting connections or the enclosure.

Inspection pointAction
Unexpected temperature rise above 15KInvestigate capacitor faults and ambient conditions outside the operating range
RustRemove corrosion and restore the protective coating
Cracked or open enclosureReplace the capacitor
Rain or water exposureMove the capacitor to a protected indoor installation
Loose fixing screwsCheck vibration, secure the fixings and use an appropriate mounting location or vibration-control measures
Iron particles or dustClean light deposits; change the installation location if contamination is excessive
Swollen enclosureInvestigate protective-device operation and the cause of damage, then replace the capacitor
LeakageInspect the enclosure and replace the damaged capacitor
